A few minutes later Laura was standing in Joseph''s sitting room， holding a small dog in her arms.She watched the ambulance people carry Joseph out.
The old man looked up at Laura.
''You will take care of him， won''t you？'' he said.Laura took Joseph''s hand.
''Don''t you worry，'' she said.''I''ll look after him， I promise.''
''Because I don''t want Kip to die before me，'' said the old man.
''Oh no， I''m sure he won''t，'' said Laura kindly， then suddenly wondered if that was the right thing to say.
''I mean...'' she went on.''Look， neither of you are going to die.You''re going to be fine， and I''ll keep Kip until you come home.''
''Thank you， my dear.You''re a good girl，'' said Joseph，and he was gone.
The ambulance drove away and Laura watched it go with the little dog in her arms.
Then she remembered.''I''m going away to the Lake District this afternoon with Nick！ What''s he going to say about this dog？'' she thought.
She remembered what Nick had said to her.''I usually go alone.I like to get back to the earth， do a bit of water sports and so on.But I don''t want to spend four days away from you.If， that is， you''d like to come？''
And Laura had said， ''Yes！ Yes， of course I''d like to come！''
Four days in the Lakes！ And with Nick！
She''d only met him a few weeks ago.He''d come into her shop and cafe for a cappuccino one day.Then he''d come in the next day and the day after that， and Laura had begun to wonder who this smart， funny man was.
