ForewordIntangible cultural heritage(ICH) is invaluable. For a country, it is a representation of the culture and traditions; for a nation, it is an expression of the history and emotions; for the entire mankind, it is the quintessence of the splendid human civilization over thousands of years.By 2019 when this book was started, China was home to the most ICH items in the world, with a total of 40 items inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Among them, 32 were on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:1.Kunqu (2001)2.Guqin (2003)3.Mongolian Folk Long Song (2005)4.Uyghur Muqam (2005)5.Sericulture and Silk Craftsmanship (2009)6.Nanyin Music (2009)7.Yunjin Brocade (2009)8.Xuan Paper (2009)9.Grand Song of the Dong Minority (2009)10.Cantonese Opera (2009)11.Epic of Gesar (2009)12.Longquan?Celadon?(2009)13.Regong Arts (2009)14.Tibetan Opera (2009)15.Epic of Manas (2009)16.Khoomei?(2009)17.Gansu Hua’er (2009)18.Xian Guyue (2009)19.Farmers’ Dance of Korean Minority (2009)20.Chinese Calligraphy (2009)21.Seal Carving (2009)22.Paper-cut (2009)23.Engraved Block Printing (2009)24.Craftsmanship for Timber-framed Structures (2009)25.Dragon Boat Festival (2009)26.Mazu (2009)27.Peking Opera (2010)28.Acupuncture (2010)29.Shadow Puppetry (2011)30.Zhusuan (2013)31.Twenty-Four Solar Terms (2016)32.Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa (2018)7 were on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding:1.Spinning, Dyeing, Weaving, Embroidering of Li Minority (2009)2.Chinese Wooden Arch Bridge (2009)3.Qiang New Year Festival (2009)4.Meshrep (2010) 5.Technology of Watertight-bulkhead (2010)6.Wooden Movable-type Printing (2010)7.Hezhen Yimakan Storytelling (2011)And 1 was on the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices:Program for Training Inheritors of Fujian Puppetry (2012).These 40 items demonstrate the spirit, history, and wisdom of the Chinese people, and they actually form a psychological foundation for the nation to stay vibrantly alive. However, a great amount of intangible cultural heritages are facing the danger of extinction today. As human society moves on people have now got quite a different way of life, which has tremendously changed the cultural environments for ICH items. This poses a huge threat particularly on those items which are history-related or custom-based, like local handicrafts and folk operas. Besides, the aging of practitioners and the lack of successors put the heritages in greater peril. Of course, China is not the only country feeling such apprehension. It is high time for the entire world to take urgent steps to safeguard these treasures of human civilization, and this, exactly, is what this book is written for. We believe that you will love this book for such three reasons:① It is inclusive. The book covers all the 40 ICH items of China, with detailed information about their basic knowledge, histories, styles, artistic values, and the cultural elements lying behind. More importantly, the book also intends to share the successful approaches that China has adopted in safeguarding cultural heritages, particularly with those who love ICH and who do related jobs both in China and across the world.② It is interesting. Instead of boring the readers like a old-styled textbook, this book combines expertise with story-telling, unfolding a vivid picture of all the 40 ICH elements in front of the audience. The book also brings readers closer to the ICH inheritors, who are ready to tell about the yesterday and today of each item to satisfy your curious ears. ③ It is visual. In this book every ICH item is illustrated with pictures and photos, so that readers will actually see the exquisite handicrafts, watch the amazing performances by folk artists, and feel the hardship in producing a single piece of work. This book tells you about each ICH item from the following four aspects:① The profile as ICH. This part gives a thorough introduction to the item, including when and why it was inscribed on the UNESCO ICH lists, and its significance as an ICH element.② The history and evolution. This part traces the origin and development of the ICH item, particularly the major changes it had experienced during each important stage along history. This part also highlights the profound influence that the ICH item had on production and people’s way of life, like how Engraved Block Printing and Wooden Movable-type Printing, to cite two examples here, had contributed to the human civilization.③ The nature and value. This part discovers what makes the item special, and what value it holds for society, culture, art, economy, industry, and education.④ The inheritance and protection. In this part China shares its practices and experience of safeguarding the ICH items with the audience. The inheritance and protection of ICH is a complicated task, and each item requires distinct approaches. China has made considerable progress thanks to its various good practices. The government offers special policies, and the cultural inheritors are taking positive steps. Folk museums are increasingly seen as a channel for people to know about the ICH, and cultural industry is flourishing as a new way to revive the cultural properties. Besides, great efforts are made to protect the related documents and the environments — both cultural and ecological — for the ICH elements. Today the entire country is keenly aware of the ICH protection.By now we already have six versions of the book — Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish, and hopefully we will see more coming up in the future, so that readers from more places of the world will get to know the splendid treasures of the Chinese culture. We hereby extend our profound appreciation to the researchers of previous studies, for the knowledge they contributed, and all the ICH inheritors, for the works they provided. Our gratitude also goes to the 13th Five-Year National Key Publishing Planning Project and China Three Gorges Press, who have offered great supports to this book. Last but not the least, we would like to thank the teachers from Tianjin Foreign Studies University, who have done enormous work in translating this book into its various versions. We hope you enjoy this book and we look forward to your feedback. We are open for your corrections if you find any mistake while reading this book.Yu JiangMar. 20th, 2020
