FOREWORD
This book is one of the outcomes of English Program of Master in Archi-tecture EPMA in School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. The EPMA aims to create a new platform for teaching master courses of architecture for international students. We intended to enlarge the reach of our schools teaching philosophy by integrating a critical understanding of regional conditions with a global and multidisciplinary network, and to have this teaching environment be engaged with the international dialogue. Since the establishment of the program in 2008, we have successfully attracted 91 international students from more than 30 countries in all five continents in the world.Within our international program, we combine the critical academic at-mosphere with real-world issues arise from the current process of Chinas rapid urbanization. Students are encouraged to be critical, to be able to think reflexively in analyzing the real situation, and to create from a specific cultural context. The program includes 4 design studios and 4 supportive theory courses. The first topic is Building, with the design studio of Design and Design Methodology, and the theory course of Theory & Practice of Regional Architecture. The second topic is Site, with the design studio of Architectural Design and Site Development, and the theory course of Histo-ry & Theory of Chinese Architecture. The third topic is City, with the design studio of Integrated Urban Design and the theory course of Contemporary Urban Planning in China. The fourth topic is System, with the design course of Green Building and the theory course of Green and Sustainable Building Methods.Urban design studio is one facing the urban issues among the above stu-dios. The studio emphasizes on the methodology of cross-culture urban issues studies, requires students to learn the general urban design meth-ods as well as response to the local culture context. Each year the studio chooses typical urban areas for the students to analyze the main issues and give the spatial strategies. In recent years, Knowledge City, Ecology City, Safe City and Edge City were selected as the themes for the studio. In 2015, two of the six groups work on Safe City won the global 2nd prize and 5th prize of 2015 UIA-PHG International Students Competition.The urban design studio is in the process of improvement. 本书是清华大学建筑学院英语硕士项目（EPMA）的教学成果系列丛书之一。建筑学院英语硕士项目旨在为国际学生搭建一个建筑学硕士课程的教学平台，致力于加深对于整合区域环境和全球性多学科网络的批判性理解，并注重实现国际间对话的教学环境。该项目自2008年创建以来，已成功吸引来自5大洲30多个国家的91位国际学生。英语硕士项目将重点学术的氛围，和当前高速发展的城市化进程所产生的现实问题结合起来。项目鼓励学生开发批判性思维，能够独立思考分析实际情况，并能在特定文化背景下有所创造。课程设置包括4门设计课和对应的4门理论课。第一组课程主题为建筑，包括设计与设计方法的设计课和地区建筑的理论与实践讲授课；第二组课程主题为场地，包括建筑与场地设计课和中国建筑历史与理论讲授课；第三组课程主题为城市，包括城市设计课和当代中国城市规划理论课；第四组课程为系统，包括绿色建筑设计课和绿色及可持续建筑设计讲授课。城市设计课程是上述课程中面向城市问题的设计课。课程强调跨文化的城市问题研究方法，学习掌握城市设计的一般性方法及不同社会文化背景下的差异性途径。每年的城市设计课程选取典型类型的城市地区，对其发展状况及面临的典型问题进行分析探讨，并提出地区更新的空间设计策略。近年来课程选题涉及知识城市生态城市安全城市边缘城市等，其中2015年以安全城市为主题的设计成果参加UIA-PHG国际建筑师协会（公共卫生组）可移动医疗设施世界大学生设计竞赛，清华大学6个团队中的2个团队分别获得全球第2名和第5名的成绩。城市设计课程在不断的探索之中，我们希望，它能成为全球学生的窗口，使他们得以接触和了解中国城市和建筑的基础情况和实践。英语硕士项目负责人 李晓东 教授 城市设计课程负责人张悦 教授
