本书关注旱作农业生态环境下农业生产率的提高和农村减贫等问题。用的面板数据由国际水稻和印度统计局加尔各答分局联合收集，追踪调查了1998年-2004年600户小农家庭在雨季的水稻生产情况和其他社会经济信息。该研究区域被认为是印度贫困的地区之一，长时间受到学者和决策者的关注。本书试图从两个方面探索调查期间研究区域的农业生产率的发展：分析小农家庭对高产水稻品种的选择及影响其选择的因素；估计小农家庭水稻生产的技术效率及调查期间水稻产量提高的主要原因。与此同时，本文还讨论了该区域农业发展和非农业发展间的关系，以及它们各自在农村减贫中发挥的作用。
