畜牧兽医专业英语是高等职业院校畜牧兽医专业学生的重要基础课。近年来， 随着我国进一步推行改革开放， 外资企业在我国投资建厂持续增加， 我国也在不断加大对外贸易活动。越来越多的公司为了拓展公司业务， 需要引进专业英语水平高的人才。这就对畜牧兽医专业英语教学提出了更高的要求， 必须立足现实情况， 改变现行落后的英语教学模式， 开展以培养学生职业能力和社会需求相适应的英语教学， 切实提高学生的英语实际应用水平和职业素养。而英语教学的改革首先是教材的改革， 必须要有与目前需求相适应的教材。为此我们组织相关院校既具有较好畜牧兽医专业知识， 又有丰富专业英语教学经验的一线教师编写了《畜牧兽医专业英语》教材。
在编写过程中， 我们充分把英语与畜牧兽医专业相结合，努力实现以培养学生综合能力为目的的专业英语教学， 既注重英语语法等基础知识的传授， 更重视培养学生的实际应用能力； 在教学素材选用方面既充分考虑畜牧兽医专业特点， 又重视英语学习的规律。本教材所有选材均为英语文献原文， 旨在让学生学习纯正的英文。在课程内容设计方面提供了大量专业释义， 并提供了课文参考译文， 帮助学生理解原文， 提高语言模仿效果， 掌握高效学习方法。总目标是让学生通过专业英语学习， 可以在将来的工作中轻松地运用所学知识看懂相关专业英文。
