MartinMunkacsiwasneveratalossforself-confidenceandwasproudtobethebest-paidphotographerofhistime.Oneofthemostsignificantphotographersofthetwentiethcentury,Munkacsishapedthebeginningsofmodernphotojournalismandsetintomotionthepreviouslystaticmediumofphotography.Munkacsicombinedjournalisticaccuracywithahighlyformalaestheticstandard,andwasanoutstandingrepresentativeoftheNeuesSehen,arguablyphotographysweightiestcontributiontoadvancedart.Hedefiedconventionbyincorporatingmotion,dramaticcameraanglesandwhimsyintohiswork,creatingfashionandsportsphotographythatwasgroundbreakingandunmatched.Munkacsisworkunfortunatelydidnotremainintact:scatteredthroughouttheworld,itwastoanextentlost.OnlytheUllsteinArchiveinBerlinmaintainsafairlyextensivecollectionofhislifesworkfromhisdaysinHungaryandGermany.Thissecond-editionofMartinMunkacsicombinespicturesfromallMunkacsisartisticphaseswithimagesandbodiesofworkthathavenotbeenseensincetheirinitialmagazinepublication.Munkacsisworkrevealsatense,technologyobsessed,glamorousandcontradictoryepoch.MartinMunkacsiwasbornininKoloszvár,Hungary,publishedhisfirstsportsphotosin1921,andin1927movedtoBerlinwhereheworkedforBerlinerIllustrirteZeitung,Koralle,Uhu,DieDame,Vu,ModernPhotographyandotherinternationalmagazines.BythetimeheimmigratedtotheUSAin1934,Munkacsihadrevolutionizedfashionphoto-graphy.HeworkedundercontractforHarpersBazaar,publishedworksinLifetogreatacclaimandphotographedtheinfluentialseriesHowAmericansLiveforLadiesHomeJournal.Munkacsialsoworkedasanadvertisingphotographerandcameramanforfilmproductions.Largelyforgotten,hediedinNewYorkin1963.
